Some men might view ballroom dancing as an activity for women. How ever there have been some pretty manly men prove that they can dance with the best of them on hit TV shows like “Dancing with the Stars”.
The truth is there are lots of great reasons men should be interested in learning ballroom dance as well and I’ll give you five of those reasons in this article.
Fitness
Ballroom dance is not for any slouch. You’re constantly moving, on your feet and stretching your muscles. You require a certain level of physical fitness to be able to perform some of the more popular ballroom dance styles. If you find you don’t exercise as much as you used to then ballroom dancing can be a great activity to keep fit.
Entertainment
Dancing is as much about having a good time as it is about fitness. IF you go into dance lessons with an open mind you’ll find it’s fun and is a great alternative to some of the regular things you used to do on a Friday night.
Team Work
Working together with your significant other to learn the steps to a particular dance takes team work. The type of team work that will spill over into the rest of your life around the house, with the kids or even just getting groceries. It’s a great growth exercise.

Holding each other close during your dance lessons or during a night out on the town dancing is romantic. It builds intimacy between you and your partner and allows you to express your emotions in a new way, even if you normally have trouble talking about them. Many men decide to take ballroom lessons because they believe it will put them in the good books with their wives or girl friends, but if you really give yourself to process you’ll get so much more in return.
Variety
Find yourself asking your partner “what do you want to do tonight” a lot? We often end up doing the same old things over and over. Going to the movies, watching TV or reading a book. Why not spice things up with dance lessons or a night on the town.

The Cha Cha, FoxTrot and Tango – Ballroom Dancing is Back!

It was only a few years ago that if you mentioned ballroom dancing to anyone under the age of 50 (no offence to anyone reading this) you’d probably get a raised eye brow or a stupid remark.
Fast forward ahead to today and thanks to a few high profile reality TV show competitions that have been going strong for a couple of years and the art form of Ballroom dancing has been tossed back into the lime light.
This article is a brief introduction to ballroom dancing for those of you who may not be familiar with the 6 main styles of the American ballroom and also to provide you a primer on how you can get involved and start learning to dance.
Six Main Styles
The six primary styles of the American ballroom are: FoxTrot, Cha Cha, Tango, Waltz, Swing and the Rhumba. This isn’t to say that you must become proficient at all six of these if you want to have fun with ballroom dance but rather if you learn any of these you’re on the right track.
These styles are what is used in ballroom competitions around the United States and across North America.
Learning to Ballroom Dance
With the upswing in popularity there’s also been an increase in the number of couples and individuals interested in learning to dance.
Dance studios are the first choice since you receive one-on-one instruction and often get to meet other couples also learning to dance. The con to taking lessons at a dance studio is the cost but you get what you pay for.
With the newer generation of teachers there are also online and dvd ballroom lessons available. These can be a great supplement to private lessons or introduction to the sport. Order a dvd dance video to get a feel for what private lessons might be like then make a decision about whether you’re ready to spend the additional money on private lessons.

Ballroom dancing is a very formal style of dancing that is used at formal events and in competitions all over the world. Each different type of ballroom dancing has numerous steps and motions that create a beautiful, fluid movement between the partners in the dance. Many individuals that are interested in ballroom dancing hire a professional dance instructor to teach them the steps of the dance in order to ensure that they are doing the dance properly.
There are several different styles of ballroom dancing that an individual may be interested in. The International Standard style of ballroom dancing includes dances such as the Waltz, the Tango, and the Fox Trot, while the International Latin style of ballroom dancing includes dances such as the Samba, the Rumba, and the Cha Cha. In America, there is also an American Smooth style and an American Rhythm style of ballroom dancing.
There are a number of other dances that are commonly classified as ballroom dancing, although they do not belong in the category using traditional classification factors. Many of these dances originated in the Americas and are not generally well known in the international community. Dances that tend to fall into this category include most American swing dances, the Salsa, the Merengue, and the Polka.
Most professional dance instructors will have the ability to teach the proper way to perform a number of these dances. The exact dances that each instructor is willing to teach will vary from instructor to instructor, as some will have more experience in a certain type of dance than others. Individuals may want to inquire which dances the professional dance instructor is willing to teach prior to scheduling a dance lesson in order to guarantee that they will be able to learn the dance that they desire.
Ballroom dancing is one of those items that take a few lessons to learn, but a lifetime to master. Many of the individuals that perform ballroom dancing on a competitive level have been dancing for years, often with the same partner so that they have the ability to communicate the movements and positions perfectly to each other. Individuals that would like to learn ballroom dancing for a less intense performance, such as a wedding reception, will still require multiple lessons to learn the timing and the movements of the dance.
One of the most important aspects of ballroom dancing is the appearance of the dance. Ballroom dancing is supposed to appear formal and classical, which means that the appearance of the individuals performing the dance needs to match the tone of the dance. Many individuals choose to wear traditional costumes of the mid-20th century, usually including a tuxedo and tails for the men and full, flowing colorful gowns for the women.
Over the years, the popularity of ballroom dancing has risen and fallen with the times. The allure and magic of ballroom dancing continues to survive in today’s modern age as the steps of the dances are relearned in each generation. As long as there are movies, music, and events to inspire the delicate movements of ballroom dancing, there will be individuals that are interested in learning the steps and the techniques.

Learning to ballroom dance for me has rekindled my life long live affair with dancing. For many, learning to ballroom dance often culminates with the excitement of a performance or competition. I love the way that learning to ballroom dance makes people deal with issues deeper that just being a klutz and ends up helping them in the long run. Learning to ballroom dance is fun and should not be a painful chore. The art of learning to ballroom dance can really be as easy as walking if you are willing to put the time and effort into learning the different ballroom styles of dance.
Ballroom Dancing
Ballroom dancing is as popular as ever, with the many television shows and movies that feature dancing. Besides the valuable social benefits of dancing, your participation in a regular program of ballroom dancing will produce significant mental and physical health benefits. Ballroom dancing also goes deeper than just dancing. Because it includes so many different dances and styles it is difficult to link ballroom dance to a single history. There’s no doubt, combining grace, rhythm, timing and co-ordination, whilst making it look effortless is probably the most difficult lesson for any would-be ballroom dancer to learn. Ballroom dancing, which includes Latin or rhythm dances like Samba and Rumba, and Standard or smooth dances like Waltz and Tango, has strict rules (as anyone who watched Joey and Mario compete on Dancing with the Stars knows), and no talking.
Dancing for Fun
Dancing is fun, its great exercise and it’s better than sitting around watching TV. As any of you who have taken a group lesson from a good dance instructor, dancing is about feeling. You must learn from the basics up and there are no shortcuts to advance social dancing. Dancing is invigorating and fun and even more so with greater confidence. You should also try to dance with as many different partners as possible to enhance your dancing and practice your leading.
Taking Lessons
In my opinion, private lessons are the best way to learn to ballroom dance. This is one of the reasons that small groups or private lessons are important because the instructor can work more closely with each individual. Private lessons are more expensive but they also provide individualized attention that can greatly speed up the learning process. On the other hand, group lessons are inexpensive and are a good way to try out a variety of dances and meet new friends. Since group lessons tend to focus on steps and patterns rather than on technique, it is especially recommended that male students take a private lesson every few weeks and use that time to study the technique of movement involved, including how to effectively lead his partner through the figures taught in the group classes.
Learning to ballroom dance is a lot of fun. You can become athletically fit and have fun with romance by learning to ballroom dance. Learning to ballroom dance can add entertainment to your life, enhance your leisure time, and improve your quality of life. How about stepping out and learning to ballroom dance.

Ballroom Dancing During Pregnancy
Exercising while pregnant is essential. It helps you stabilize your blood sugar levels, prevents constipation, and boosts your energy levels. Studies have shown that exercising makes it easy for you to undergo labor, easier to lose post natal weight and gain a post-baby body back. Keep in mind that you need to consult with your doctor regarding your exercise plans as part of your routine.
If you have exercised before you became pregnant, you only need to modify your routine.
As the body begins to gain weight, a lot of pregnant women find find it hard to find an exercise program that is suited for them. If you want a fun, inexpensive, and safe way of exercising try ballroom dancing! It is a form of low-impact exercise activity. It’s a fun activity since there’s music and an opportunity for you to socialize with others. You can also include your spouse to dance with you!
Ballroom dancing is safe because it’s easier on your ankles, legs, and lower back. It’s not jarring on your joints as well. Examples of ballroom dances are rhythm dances (Cha Cha, Mambo, Rumba, Salsa, Samba,and Swing) and smooth dances (Fox Trot, Tango, and Waltz). With a lot of dances to choose from, here are the most appropriate for pregnant women:
The Waltz can either be slow and smooth or quick and twirling (opt for the former). It begins with a basic box step with only four directions to make a square on the floor. It’s a beautiful dance that highlights the beauty of a soon-to-be mother!
The Rumba is a great dance to learn once you’ve mastered the Waltz. It doesn’t require much movement. Once you know the stepping, you’ll be able to apply it in almost any dance situation.
You should not be worried about your wardrobe for your dance classes. Unlike the elaborate dresses and high-heeled shoes worn by women in dance sports events and TV shows, dress comfortably. Choose shoes that feel good and a little bit larger than your normal ones. Athletic shoes with rubber soles are not safe since they tend to stick on the dancefloor.

Flexibility – Throughout your Latin dance lessons you will be taught to extend your arms, legs and waist as you stretch to create beautiful body lines. This can increase your blood circulation, range of motion in your joints and reduce muscle tension.
Social Atmosphere – Sharing a smile with your teacher and fellow students can translate to a good mood in an instance. Meeting new people and socializing is part of the dancing experience!
Exercise – Body isolation, quick steps, arm movements, turns, spins, kicks, jumps make for a great workout that is a lot more fun than staring at a white wall while running on your treadmill in the basement!
Endurance – Whether you are dancing the Samba at 50bpm (bloody fast), or the Salsa at 190bpm, after regular repeated 45-minute class sessions, running the marathon may just get back on your to-do-list after all.
Stress- Relief – Believe it or not, Latin dancing is a form of meditation! The next time you are dancing just ask yourself: What am I thinking about? You will probably never get to ask yourself this question, because you will not be thinking! You will be dancing! In the worst case, you may be thinking about your next dance move! I doubt any office or home problems will rise to the surface till long after the class ends. A much needed break!
Body Toning – Forget your dumbbells and tone your body through dancing instead.
Posture Awareness – In your Latin dance lessons you will often be told to stretch your neck to the ceiling and NEVER LOOK AT THE FLOOR. Imagine transferring what you learned in your dance class to your everyday life! Feel your back aches disappear as your spine alignment improves.
Confidence – Dancing socially in public or performing at dance competitions/shows will make your feel much more confident in your daily life too. You will begin to move away from your comfort zone and move toward new unknown territories to experience the full and exciting life you always wanted.
Improved Balance – Having learned the correct technique, posture awareness, frame and connection with your partner, your balance will improve also.
Elegance & Grace – “Smooth moves, light feet, soft touch, pleasing to the eye, stylish”, are just some of the comments you will hear from people who see you dance. Who knows maybe someone may even call you charming?
