Ballroom Dancing Etiquette
Ballroom dancing is an art and it is also a form of socialization that has its own etiquette. Here are some really helpful basic tips that every novice ballroom dancer should take to heart. Even when they are not followed rigorously, awareness of these rules really helps improve everyone’s dance experience:
Like other types of exercises or sports, selecting the right clothes is essential. If you’re new to a dance studio, try to take note of the dancers’ fashion sense and find clothes that are comfortable yet appropriate with the studio’s culture. You don’t want to look out of place with your fellow dancers. Keep in mind that your clothes shouldn’t get in the way of you and your partner when dancing. Wearing clothes in layers can help you avoid wardrobe malfunction and embarrassment.
For everyone’s safety and especially yours, wear dance shoes that allow you to move comfortably on the dance floor. Shoes with rubber soles such as sneakers can stick to the floor during turns and spins and this can lead to injuries. Shoes with leather soles are most suited for dancing. If you dance regularly, really consider investing in quality shoes designed for ballroom dancing.
Do pay attention to your personal hygiene as ballroom dancing is a partnership sport! In addition, there’s a high chance of dancing with several partners. So take time to refresh yourself during breaks and wash your hands after using the rest room. Avoid eating pungent foods a few hours prior to the dance session, bring breath mints, and brush your teeth. Do not use too much fragrance as this can be irritating for some people, and if you tend to sweat a lot, consider bringing extra clothes.
The dance floor also needs proper care and maintenance. Do not bring food and drinks onto the dance floor as these can spill and cause potential injuries. Be careful of the accessories that you wear and choose items that don’t fall off.
Whether you are having a lesson, participating in a dance practice party, competition or social event, you’re going to share the dance floor with different people of different age groups, backgrounds, and ethnicity. This makes it very likely that you will encounter dancers who have cultural behaviors that are entirely different from yours. For example, it’s possible that a shy person can be mistaken as being cold or unfriendly. So be sensitive to the attitudes and cultures of others.
While traditionally, men are supposed to ask the women out to dance, nowadays it is OK if done otherwise. Be polite when asking people to dance even when you’re very familiar with them. Nodding towards them, snapping fingers, and waving towards the dance floor are inappropriate gestures when asking people to dance. Instead, you should walk up to them, make direct eye contact, reach out your hand, and ask them politely.
It is usually polite to simply accept an offer to dance. In some cases, it is OK to decline a request politely for some valid reason (e.g. that person has hurt you in the past). In this case, it is better not to dance that particular dance with anyone else.
The line of dance is the direction that dancers should follow and this is counter-clockwise. Dancers should have have at least a basic knowledge of where they should be on the dance floor. The dance for is divided roughly into three lanes:
Outer/Fast Lane:
Progressive dances such as the Fox Trot, Polka, Tango and Waltz should be done outside the floor.
Inner/Slower Lane:
This is for the slower dancers. They should let the faster dancers pass on the outside.
Center:
Stationary dances such as Cha-Cha, Mambo, Rumba, Salsa, and Swing should be done on the middle of the dance floor. The dancers should endeavor to stay aware and out of the path of those in the outer lanes.
Couples just coming onto the dance floor should give way to those who are already dancing, and men should take extra care of their partners and be prepared for urgent moves to evade a collision. The ladies should also look past their partners’ shoulders to prevent up coming collisions.
Dancing should be more compact when you’re on a crowded dance floor. When this is the case, keep your steps small and your elbows to yourself. You need to reduce the size of your turns and of course, as much as possible, try not to bump into other dancers. If you do collide with another person or couple, do not swear or blame them. Smile and apologize sincerely. Be considerate all the time and if you find dancers who aren’t, do not pick fights with them. Just move to another section of the dance floor.
Novice dancers should never be ashamed that they are new. Everyone starts out as a novice, even today’s experts. And it is definitely more embarrassing if you pretend to be a pro when you are not. Ballroom dancing is a learned activity and even long-time dancers need to brush up on their skills often. Do so with a smile!

Finding the Right Ballroom Dance Shoes for You
If you ever wondered about how ballroom dancers are able to move so gracefully in the dance floor, the fact of the matter is that ballroom dance shoes play a huge role. These kinds of shoes are a lot different from normal shoes because the soles don’t have as much traction as regular leather or rubber shoes. Also, the cushioning of the shoes is a lot softer so that they aren’t hard on the feet.
For men’s ballroom dance shoes, there are various types for certain dances:
One type would be the standard shoe which is typically a black shiny leather oxford with a moderately slippery sole. Another type would be the Latin shoe which looks like a typical dress leather shoe with shoe laces.
There’s also the wide width shoe which is used by professional dancers. On the other hand, for women’s ballroom dance shoes, there are several types suited for certain dances. One type would be the Latin shoe which has a high heel and a strap to secure the top of the feet and another strap to hold the ankle. Another shoe would be the closed-heel which is the same style as the latter except it has a closed tip that covers the toes.
The low-heel shoe is used for dances that are more complex and require more movement. The heels are half the size of usual Latin shoes and enable the dancer to move more freely without the risk of tripping. There is the rhythm shoe which has metal plates underneath for tap dancing routines that are part of performances. This kind of ballroom dance shoes are known to make a tapping sound.
When it comes to ballroom dance shoes, you have to know which shoes are appropriate for a certain dance style. You cannot just wear any shoe and assume that they will be good enough to dance in. The reason why there are specific shoes for every dance is because the movements and choreography are different. Each shoe is designed to protect the dancer from injuries. Ballroom dancing is just like any other sport in terms of the necessary equipment you need to wear. A basketball player needs his rubber shoes and a ball to be able to play and a dancer needs ballroom dancing shoes. Not only is this a must but it is part of ballroom dancing etiquette.
It is the responsibility of every dancer to adhere to the rules so that one doesn’t get injured or injures their partner. If you think you cannot get injured in ballroom dancing, think again. A lot of dancers have broken and sprained their feet due to reckless moves. Some are due to the lack of proper attire such as wearing the right shoes.
So if you are planning on taking up ballroom dancing, always keep in mind that you need to have the proper attire.

If you are looking for a night out or you just want to meet new friends, ballroom dancing is a fantastic way to achieve this it doesn’t how old or young you are. Many dance styles offer dance lessons for a minimal fee, while intricate ballroom dancing lessons will naturally cost you more. Professional dance lessons by qualified dance teachers are given in all types of dancing. You want to know the low more about dancing before you commit to lessons.
Try to find ballroom dance instructors or classes in your area. Group classes are an important aid in learning to dance. Classes are meant to show the fun in ballroom dancing and prepare everyone for a lifetime of social dancing enjoyment. In addition you should practice as much as possible.

It’s sexy, and step by step, whether it’s the salsa, swing, meringue or tango, ballroom dancing is sweeping across the country.
Ballroom dancing is a great way for anyone to learn how to dance, develop self-confidence, and improve social skills. Ballroom dancing is basically a performance, so a bit of a flair for the dramatic is a useful attribute. Ballroom Dancing is by definition a man and a woman moving as one. To some people, ballroom dancing is a hobby or serves as a social outlet. Even ballroom dancing is enjoying something of a renaissance. Ballroom Dancing is for students interested in developing ballroom dancing comptency/skills, coordination, rhythm, and diversity. Ballroom dancing is the best contact sport in the world. Ballroom dancing is really easy, more so than most people seem to think. Ballroom dancing is by its very nature both a competitive and/or social activity that can easily be learned and enjoyed by all.

Ballroom Dancing is for students interested in developing ballroom dancing comptency/skills, coordination, rhythm, and diversity. Ballroom dancing is the best contact sport in the world. Ballroom dancing is really easy, more so than most people seem to think. Ballroom dancing is by its very nature both a competitive and/or social activity that can easily be learned and enjoyed by all.

Real Men Aren’t Afraid Of Ballroom Dancing
Anybody who still believes the myth that ballroom dancing is for sissies has either been living under a rock or is simply using that as an excuse for their own fears.
Emmitt Smith of Dallas Cowboys fame, and former Superbowl Champion, waltzed away Wednesday night with another winning trophy to place on his mantel, this one the championship Mirror Ball Trophy from ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”.
I am so proud of this man for shattering all the stereotypes, and offering a resounding response once and for all to the age old question: what type of man learns ballroom dancing? The answer….a REAL man!
There can surely be no question as to this man’s virility, nor his confidence in himself. Not only did he plunge wholeheartedly into unfamiliar waters, but he chose to do it on nationwide television, in front of millions of viewers. How many men (or women, for that matter) have the guts to do that?
I’ve heard all the whiny excuses for not taking ballroom dancing lessons…I’ve got two left feet….dancing is for sissies….I don’t have time to learn something new….what good does it do to know how to dance, I’ll never compete…I’ll look stupid….I’m no good at it…I don’t like it….it’s too expensive…and on and on ad nauseum. It doesn’t matter the words they choose, they’re all saying basically the same thing…”I lack confidence in myself and I’m scared”. How terribly, pathetically sad.
Knowing what I know about ballroom dancing, there simply is no excuse for not learning. I’ve seen men without legs on the ballroom dance floor. I’ve watched macho types, geeky types and overweight men move with grace as they executed a beautiful promenade. I’ve known men who took on odd jobs to pay for continued lessons. I’ve witnessed men literally dragged into the studio against their will and watched with pride as they developed into, not just great dancers, but one even went on to become a phenomenal instructor. How much they all would have missed if they had let their fears keep them from trying.
There are many things in this world to be afraid of. Ballroom dancing isn’t one of them. Don’t be afraid to open yourself to new possibilities. The numerous benefits you’ll receive may shock you.
