Ballroom dancing encompasses both traditional dances, such as the Waltz, Tango and Quickstep, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz –(the “Standard” category)- and latin dances, including Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba, Samba and Jive, which make up the “Latin” category. On a higher level, however, “Ballroom” branches into two distinct styles – “International”, consisting of International Standard and International Latin, and “American”, consisting of American Smooth and American Rhythm. American Style is more prominent on the North American continent, but virtually unknown throughout Europe and the rest of the world – for this reason, we encourage students to start with International style.

Differences:

If you’re watching ballroom dancing and wondering how to distinguish between International and American styles, here are two points to look out for: dance positions and leg action Standard and Smooth dances. International Standard is danced almost exclusively in closed dance positions while American Smooth allows more moves executed in open position.The Latin and Rhythm dances tend to be a bit harder to tell apart. The dancers’ leg action is probably the best clue as to which style they’re dancing here. In American Rhythm, the dancers will use a bent leg action allowing them to delay their change of weight on the step, so you will frequently see them with bent legs. However, in International Latin, the dancers usually have the look of two straight legs which comes from the faster change of weight on the step.The different ballroom dances can be characterized as follows:

Slow Waltz is counted in ¾ time, and has a classic swooping rise and fall. This is the Standard dance usually learned first.
Tango is known for quick, sharp snaps and dramatic pauses. It is much more stylized than Argentine Tango, from which it was derived, although it is still passionate. It alternates between slow, stalking motion and explosive speed..
Slow Foxtrot is the Standard dance many find the most challenging, and most rewarding. It is smooth, playful, and very slow. Like American Foxtrot, it is done to Big Band music in 4/4 time, but its basic timing is slow-quick-quick and the speed is much slower.
Quickstep is a high-speed version of the Slow Foxtrot. It’s done to Swing-type music and is very energetic and vivacious. Advanced figures include hops, skips, and jumps
Viennese Waltz is about twice the speed of Waltz. The international style is faster than the American style, and very simple. There are only a few figures in the dance, since partners never release their arm hold. Although the speed can make the dance challenging

Foxtrot is a great social dance: it’s fun, not hard to learn, and easy to lead and follow. Traditionally danced to Big Band music, it is smooth and sexy. Its basic timing is slow-slow-quick-quick. The American Foxtrot is upbeat and sprightly, more like the Quickstep than the Slow Foxtrot, looking like an old Fred and Ginger movie. Some jazziness and showdancy quality is added that is not appropriate (or even possible) in international style.

The different latin dances can be characterized as follows:
Cha-Cha is a fast and flirtatious dance that was created by replacing the “slow” in Rumba with a quick”side-close-side” (cha-cha-cha).
Samba is super sexy with a pulsing “1 a-2″ beat and fluid hip action. American Samba features simpler figures than International Samba, but the same music and technique
Rumba is the only slow International Latin dance; is slower than American Rumba, but faster than Bolero. It is sensual and passionate. Its basic timing is slow-quick-quick, like American Style, but all of the figures are different; the “slow” is on beat 2 of the music instead of beat 1.
Paso Doble portrays a bullfight. The man depicts the matador, while the female portrays the flowing and snapping cape. There are only a few songs to which Paso Doble is danced, and they all have the musical highlights in the same place. Thus this dance is usually completely choreographed from start to finish; each musical highlight corresponds to a dramatic pose or drop.
Jive is a tight, precise, extremely fast version of East Coast Swing. Its basic timing is rock step, triple-step, triple-step, and it features swift flicks and kicks and lots of spins.
Bolero is a very slow dance compared to the Rumba. It is swooping and graceful.
East Coast Swing is the basis of many of the other Swings. Its basic timing is “triple-step, triple-step, rock-step

Mambo is similar to Salsa (very fast!). The basic timing is quick-quick-slow.

Salsa has recently grown to be one of most popular club dances. It is fast, sexy, and features a lot of improvisation. It is extremely popular in clubs around the world.

Merengue is a Club dance that is done to really fast Latin music. It consists of very simple steps organized into sets of 8, and features a characteristic hip.

Most people would suggest that in order to cut down our weight, we must go dieting and gym training. Unfortunately, these things are easier said than done. Going to the gym can be very stressful and time consuming with all the exercises that are to be done there. Also, it is very limited to people who have a good health standing since disabled people cannot participate. This is where the alternative forms of exercise come in. One of which is dancing. With dancing, the whole body is used.

Salsa is one of the most popular and well-liked dances of today. It is considered as one of the trendiest dances today. It came from the Caribbean area as a social dance. It is also believed that it is a fusion of 3 other Latin dances such as Mambo, Rhumba, and Cha Cha. This gives the feel of dancing 3 dances at once. Another thing is that movies have also come up such as “Dirty Dancing” and “Dance with Me” which are starred by famous celebrities Patrick Swayze and Vanessa Williams. This justifies that the Salsa dance floor is not only for Latinos. Salsa has moves which are simple, yet very groovy. The steps are so catchy, even the older population would enjoy it. The moderately fast tunes used in Salsa would surely push people to move and dance which would burn the calories off. Additionally, the music of salsa is so cool and catchy that every beat would give fun.

The steps are quite simple to understand. Basically, the beat is on 4/4 time signature but then the 4th beat is skipped or at rest. That way, the counting would be 1, 2, 3, rest, and then the counting continues.

Here is a brief introduction on how to dance the basic moves:

Your stance should be in a way that you are standing with both your feet close together.

1st beat – Step your left foot forward. By doing so, you’re also putting your weight on your left foot.

2nd beat – With the left foot still forward, shift your weight back on your right foot. This may give you the idea of stepping your right foot in place.

3rd beat – Bring your left foot back in place with your right foot.

4th beat – This is considered as the rest period wherein you may prepare for the shifting of foot for the next beat.

Then repeat the steps using the alternate foot, which at this instance is the right foot. Of course when dancing with a partner, alternate feet are used when stepping forward. For example, the man steps his left foot forward while the woman steps her right foot forward.

A quicker way to learn dance steps is to check out dance videos which are readily available online.

All in all, salsa is something that is accepted and loved by different cultures due to its simplicity with its steps and patterns yet the fun it could give you. This makes the once dreadful fat loss treatment now an enjoyable experience. Also, it enables everyone to socialize with a lot of people while removing stress and maintaining fitness.

Salsa a dance performance of a passionate romance.

From the influences of mambo, samba, rumba, cha-cha-cha, and others comes salsa – the youngest of the Latin-American dance royalties. Sexy, sensual and passionate characterizes each movement and moment of its performance. In the late 1950′s, it first came out of the limelight and made noise from Cuba to New York. From then on, it continuously evolved from an eccentric combination of Latin American dances and formed its own eccentric modern identity. It combined the music of Afro and Latin beats, while blending sensual and sophisticated modern dance movements.

Salsa has many popular meanings – music, food, dance and others. Nevertheless, salsa is a lifestyle. Sensuality, sexy, passion and romance, are what it suggests. Music, dance and all else are just part of a hot passionate lifestyle that goes along with the dance; more than that it is a lifestyle of romance, elegance and passion.

Salsa dance is known for its expressive sensual dance moves. It requires movements from all parts of the body – foot, hips, hands, neck, shoulders. For salsa, each body-movement is a language that connotes meaning. It is a dance of communication, a body interaction initiated in a medium of music and beat where partners communicate using their body. Each body action has an equivalent response.

Salsa dancing could burn dance floors with flaming hot motions of romantic desire. It is as if scattered potions filled the air to indulge people in a mood for love. With passionate execution of movements, thumb-thumping heart beats, and a free flowing aesthetically beautiful dance moves, a dance can actually speak language of emotion and passion.

Salsa dancing is always good entertainment. Its eye catching body motions and positions is always an alluring view for any one from different cultures. It can bring out the irresistible sexy figure of the dancers, on both man and woman. Instantly, the couple can suddenly become the most romantic partner on the dance floor. In addition, it can give off impressions of gentleness, sexy and passionate to the dancing couples.

Latin dances such as salsa are expected to be an eye candy. It can instantly attract all kinds of people with its universal language, the body language. Dancers speaking in the language of the body easily leaves off impressions of sophistication and elegance. A woman moving in a beat and rhythm of salsa can make herself the most beautiful on the dance floor while the man partner of the woman becomes the gentleman on the dance floor. It’s just a matter of performance.

The most important technique in salsa dancing aside from the foot, hip and body swings and turns, is the ability to dance to the music and improvise gracefully.

Salsa is not about the steps borrowed from rumba, or anywhere else. It is about making a free flowing movement expressing yourself to rhythm of the music. And the more eccentric and improvised it is, the more beautiful it gets. So don’t forget to improvise and patent your own moves.

Light clothing, comfortable shoes for dancing and salsa dancing can be a lot of exercise and very energetic. Avoid any form of clothing restricted, except for lycra or something similar.

There are some rules that the thumbs down as a new member of the community should learn.

1) It is considered impolite to refuse a dance if asked by their partner

2) Do not drink or bags to the dance floor and try to dance around them and you can not dance salsa, if there are obstacles around. There is not much movement and either you or your partner will eventually fall and fall.

Followers must help the footsteps of their leader does. This makes it much easier to dance salsa, and can also be used as an opportunity to showcase their elegance and creativity.

When the ball look at your partner and smile! Remember having fun. Do not look at your feet or your partner’s feet.

9) If you are the leader and going to dance around to avoid being too close or too far. Try to be somewhere in the middle where you can easily carry. Partners of heights rarely have to adjust your hand has to move for comfort.
