This article outlines questions to ask oneself when selecting a dance studio to learn Salsa Dancing brought to you by DanceSalsaInToronto.com
When choosing a particular dance studio for Salsa or a dance studio in general one should evaluate the following questions below. The way you answer the questions below will determine the type of dance studio for you to enroll in to your Salsa classes.
What is your purpose in seeking a dance studio offering Salsa Classes?
This question is the most important one when choosing a Salsa dance studio. If your answer is to learn how to Salsa dance for fun than want to ensure that the dance studio and the staff create that environment. There are dance studios out there that are ran more like a boot camp format and also some dance studios that go at a very relax pace for those who enroll as a casual hobby.
If you want to learn proper leading and following techniques in your Salsa dance studio than you should interview your instructors a little more pertaining to their experience in Salsa dancing and Salsa dancing instructions in the dance studio. Don’t hesitate to ask your Salsa dance instructors it the dance studio about his or her thoughts on these topics. Ask your instructors at the dance studio about their thoughts on Salsa dancing styles, leading, following, and their definitions of beginner, intermediate, and advance at the dance studio. You will find that every Salsa instructor and almost every dance studio has a different perspective on Salsa dancing.
If you are learning how to dance to compete than be sure to ask your Salsa instructor and the dance studio’s experience on preparing choreographies. Just because one is a good dancer does not mean that they can choreograph the same way.
If you want to learn how to dance with proper techniques ask your instructor on how they feel about dance techniques. If one wants to dance Salsa socially outside of the dance studio than there should be no movements taught in the Salsa class that involved having to memorizing turn patterns. Every move has to be lead and be followed without memorizing steps. Make sure that you pay attention to how the Salsa turn patterns are being taught at the dance studio.
Ensure that the instructor’s philosophies are congruent with yours at the dance studio.
Some dance studios will teach you the essence of dancing and some dance studios and instructors will teach one how to dance with precise and correct techniques. Once again explore the philosophies of the Salsa dance studio.
Is the environment of the Salsa dance studio suitable for you?
Ask yourself how you feel about the environment of the dance studio. Does it give a warm feeling; does it make you want to dance when you are at the dance studio? Are the students and staff welcoming when you arrived at the Salsa dance studio? Ensure that your Salsa instructor, staff and students at the dance studio make you feel welcomed consists. Ensure that the ambience suits you when selecting a dance studio. The environment at the studio should make you feel welcomed and want to instantly dance whenever you are there.
Also ask your instructor at the dance studio about the size of the Salsa classes. The size should be reason so that the instructor could pay attention to every student at the dance studio during classes. If you notice that classes are very large and there is no enough room to move than you should question if profit is the only factor behind the dance studio.
What is the proximity of the dance studio from you? If the dance studio is too far you may not feel motivated to attend your Salsa classes. Therefore make sure you choose a dance studio that is close enough for you to want to attend your Salsa classes.
What are the monthly fees and programs available at the dance studio?
Once should find out what the monthly budget would be to enroll oneself in a Salsa dance studio. Most Salsa dance studios offer packages that are tailored to individuals’ budgets. Do not hesitate to ask the dance studio regarding discounts if you enroll in more than one semester or program at the dance studio.
Find out the type of lessons that are offered in your Salsa Dance Studio. Different lesson types include group, semi, and private classes. Also find out about how often the instructor and dance studios go out to Salsa socials with their students.
Ensure that you are comfortable with the fees that you have paid for your Salsa programs at the dance studio. One should not feel pressured by the staff of the dance studio with up selling techniques.
Why do you want to learn how to dance?
Ensure that you understand how why you want to learn how to dance Salsa. This will be your main motivator to going to your Salsa classes at the dance studio. Some people enroll in dance classes at dance studios for fun, some to really learn how to dance professionally, and some enroll to compete.
There are also social benefits when enrolling in a Salsa dance studio. Being a student in a dance studio is similar to having a membership to a golf club. It will fulfill your physical as well as social needs. Being a member of a dance studio will quickly help you extend your social circle and make new friends. These friends from the dance studio will likely be whom you will be going to Salsa clubs and socials with.
All the points above should be evaluated when choosing a Salsa dance studio and a Salsa instructor. They may not be hard questions to answer, however only yourself would have answers to those questions. The answers and reasons will vary from person to person which is why so many dance studios exist.
In summary:
Your dance studio’s philosophies should match yours
Your dance studios’ instructors teaching methods must be suitable for you
Your dance studio should offer the experience in the object that you have for Salsa dancing
Your dance studio should teach how to properly lead and follow rather than memorizing turns
Your dance studio’s environment should make you feel comfortable
Your dance studio should be within reasonable proximity from you
Your dance studio staff and student should make you feel consistently welcomed
Your dance studio’s fees should fit in your budget
Your dance studio should offer classes that are suitable for you
Your dance studio should have class sizes that are reasonable

William Lu (Program Coordinator, Assistant Instructor)
William’s background is in business management and IT. He is the co-founder of Call4PcHelp an IT consulting firm providing services to his GTA clientele. His interest in Salsa dancing spawned in 2006 where he was invited to a party with a theme of Salsa dancing. Not knowing how to even spell “Salsa”, he immediately subscribed for a Salsa crash course 2 weeks prior to the event. Through many days of intense training he was able to lead a few basic turn patterns. Due to his busy entrepreneurial work schedule he has departed from Salsa training until 2008. Being passionate in martial arts, he wanted to find other activities that will complement his progression and passion in his martial arts training. It is then he gave Salsa another try.
At that moment he met his current instructor Yared Rodriguez. His interest for Salsa spiked again after seeing how his teacher danced. He was amazed at how Yared could make the simplest turn pattern looked really advanced. He thought that the style of his teacher was spectacular as to how he can fuse various different styles of Salsa without being restricted by their “styles” using Cuban Salsa as the foundation. Every turn pattern and body movement performed was in sync with the music that is being played. It was at the moment where William’s Salsa goals were established.
William is still training with Yared Rodriguez to date to continue to enhance his techniques in Salsa dancing.

GREED Starring Daniel Garcia Revealed (free download)
GREED is a must-have routine if you’re working for tips.
Here’s why: GREED allows you to get a spectator to reach into his/her wallet and hand you money BEFORE you’ve even done any magic. Emotionally, that person has in a very real sense already given that money to you. Even though they haven’t said you can keep it yet, the spectator knows that he/she may not ever see that dollar again, and he/she is OK with that… otherwise he/she wouldn’t have handed it to you.

What is Salsa Dancing?

Salsa dancing is likely a term that you have heard and you may be wondering what it is. This type of dancing comes from Puerto Rico and Cuba. It is believed that it was brought to other destinations from migrants that traveled around for work. Many people take an interest in salsa dancing after seeing it performed when they visit those countries where it came from.
It is important to note that there are many variations though of salsa dances. Those are usually geographical in nature so you will find that of interest when you go to a new area and see people engaging in salsa dancing. Keep in mind though that there is plenty of freedom with this type of dance so you don’t have to feel out of place if you have moves that are different than those you see around you.
There are some basic moves involved though that you will want to become familiar with. There is a four beat measure that you need to be able to identify within the music. Basically you will be moving for three of the beats and then still for one of them which gives it a very dramatic effect. The weight of your body has to be shifted with the beats too so you will have to take time to learn how this is done. Observing others doing it is a great way to see what I am talking about as well.
What is fascinating about salsa dancing is that the entire body is involved in it. The arms and the legs take on many forms throughout the music. The hips and buttocks are moving as well so it is a great way to get your entire body to relax and to relieve built up tension. Salsa dancing is extremely popular in the society of New York City so if you go there be ready to go out and have some great fun meeting people and dancing the night away.
This type of dancing seems to go through trends of popularity though in our various cultures. Some people think that salsa dancing is fairly new but it has been around since the 1950’s. There have been quite a few variations of it since that time. Generally the salsa is a dance that two people do together. However, there are some variations of it that involve solo dancing or exchanging partners during the dance.
Don’t be intimidated by salsa dancing as it may look complex at first but it really isn’t. Many of the moves are quite repetitive after you have learned the basics of it. The key is to have a good time with it and not to focus on being perfect with off of your moves. The style you have will get better the more you dance.
A word of warning though – salsa dancing is going to give you quite a workout! You don’t want to just show up at a club and think you can do them if you aren’t in good shape. You need to practice at home so you can do the moves for a long time without getting tired or working up a sweat. In fact, salsa dancing is a great way to burn calories and get into shape while you are having a great time.
Many locations offer salsa dancing lessons too if you are interested in learning more moves. They are offered for beginners as well as some advanced lessons so take the time to find out what your choices are. You just may find that your new weekend outing you look forward to is going out salsa dancing for the evening!

How to Conquer Fear When Dancing Salsa

Preparing your mind and body for dance is so important to ensure that you are not holding yourself back from enjoying the actual act of dancing. Have you had a time when you just wanted to dance so badly but then you didn’t do it because you felt that everyone else was better than you? Well, the good news is that you are not alone or the first one to experience this fear. Whether it’s at a wedding ceremony, a dance club, events in school, etc. some people are so beset at the feeling of being humiliated and ashamed that they get embarrassed and hide wherever they can or simply walk away. It’s a pity because if you do this, then you are just keeping yourself from progressing or getting better at dancing. The trick to any task or endeavour is repetition. Everyone had to start clumsily but through it all it has resulted in some great dancers.
Enrolling in salsa dance classes will certainly help with your confidence and allow you to release those uncertainties through practicing in a controlled environment where everyone is starting at the same level. So don’t put it off, get out and dance! With great classes, great music and pleasant people, it’s entertaining and you will find that it is not complicated at all, but you have to take that first step. There’s nothing to worry about, your Salsa Instructors have been trained and will break down the steps to make it easy for you to understand and learn them easily. They will also teach you to focus on your technique, style, flow and not just learning step patterns. The step pattern is the fancy moves you make when you move on the floor. Technique and styling is what you look like and feel like when you do it.
You will be inspired by others in your class who are also Salsa enthusiasts as they share their ideas to improve the whole group. It’s up to you to get as much as you can out of these classes and the supportive surroundings to ensure that you see improvement on a weekly basis. The nice thing about it is that if you focus, you will actually see immediate improvement week over week. The more you practice and just focus on learning and growing, the more you defeat your fears and in turn the faster you progress. Always keep in mind that experienced dancers were beginners before just like you. So just relax, have fun and just enjoy the experience of what Salsa dancing is meant to be!

The word “salsa” in Spanish means sauce. Salsa dancing is also known as slot dancing because couples don’t move around a large area of the dance floor; instead they stay in a more fixed or smaller area of the floor. So are you ready to learn Salsa dancing?
The salsa has an eight beat pattern that is made up of two bars of four beats. The Salsa music is usually complicated and fast with around 180 beats per minute. The salsa pattern is generally one of three steps and then a skipped step or a tap on the fourth beat.
The basic step is as follows: On counts 1, 2, and 3 the leader steps forward, then you replace the weight to your previous support foot keeping it in place, and then step backward. On counts 5, 6, and 7 you step backwards, then you replace the weight to your previous support foot keeping it in place, and then step forward again.
The follower does exactly the same steps but in the reverse order. The basic step is the basis for many of the other salsa patterns.
Some of the breaks to the basic step are:
1. Side Break – You start from either foot and step sideways; then you replace the weight to your previous support foot, keeping it in place.
2. Back Break – You start from either foot and step backwards; then you replace the weight to your previous support foot, keeping it in place.
3. Forward Break – You start from either foot and step forward; then you replace the weight to your previous support foot, keeping it in place.
There are many different salsa styles that involve different timing of the steps or different patterns as you move across the dance floor. Combine style with attitude and personal add ins and you get quite the salsa show!
The Cuban style can be danced as a contratiempo or on-one. With the Cuban Salsa, on counts 1, 2, and 3 a backward basic occurs while on counts 5, 6, and 7 a forward basic happens. The follower mirrors the leader’s movements. It is common practice with the Cuban to have the leader and follower circle each other regularly.
The Dile que no or cross body lead is also essential to the Cuban. This is the most complex of moves and is not designed for beginners. However, once you master it, it can be used in the Rueda, Cuban Casino, and Wheel Dance.
In Latin American countries the Columbian style is the most common. Here the leader and follower do their moves standing in one place. Most of the moves are based off the Cuban style with the main difference being lack of space involved. It’s a very sexy version to watch!
The LA style is a derivative of the Cuban style with the addition of the cross body lead. The leader steps forward on 1, on 2 and 3 it’s a step to the right while turning 90 degrees to face to the left. The follower then steps forward on 5 and 6, then on 7 and 8 turns while the leader is making the 90 degree turn. By the 8 count the leader and follower are in opposite positions. The Los Angeles is the flashiest form of Salsa dancing.
That’s just a few of the most common styles. Of course there are plenty others, and then there’s always the creative element that comes into play.
Learning the Salsa from an article can be a bit overwhelming, but if you really want to learn it check into either local dance classes or online dance lessons. You’ll be Salsa dancing like a pro in no time!

The 5 Biggest Misconceptions About Salsa Dancing

]]>
MISCONCEPTION 1: Only latinos and naturally gifted dancers can learn salsa
Anyone who attends a salsa congress or goes to salsa socials will know that latinos are now the minority of the salsa scene. Salsa has also become immensely popular internationally in countries like China, the UK, and Australia. Most salsa dancers have normal jobs like engineers, programmers, bankers, bartenders. You don’t need to be specially gifted with a dance gene or born into a latino family to learn salsa. The learning process is part of the fun. Joining a dance school is a great way to meet people and you become a part of a close community of friends who share a common interest.
MISCONCEPTION 2: I just feel the music. The music tells me what to do.
This is often an excuse used by people who are insecure about their lack of technique. They accuse trained dancers for being too technical and not feeling the music. The problem with this kind of thinking is that expressing yourself to the music is only one part of the salsa equation. If you’re only dancing by yourself then feel free to do whatever you feel like. We all know that salsa is a partner dance NOT a freestyle solo dance. It’s not just about your personal individual expression. It also needs to be an act of connecting with your partner so that you express the music TOGETHER. This connection cannot happen when one person does not know how to lead/follow. Remember that it takes two to tango! This is why people go to a dance studio to train, because an instructor will be able to give you guidance about the proper way to lead/follow.
MISCONCEPTION 3: I don’t need classes, the man should be able to lead me
I hear this from women who learned to salsa through social dancing. I personally know somebody who is a world famous instructor and only took one beginner class her whole life. She is the exception to the rule. This method would not work for 90% of the people I know who need things broken down for them. What I find from dancing with girls who are untrained is that they expect the guy to do all the work when a dance should feel like a 50/50 partnership. A good follower is light and easy to lead and this is where I think everyone follower can benefit from classes.
MISCONCEPTION 4: He/She is an amazing dancer therefore they must also be a great instructor
This probably the most untrue statement of them all. I have found the opposite to be true most of the time. Being a good dancer requires a completely different mindset than being a good instructor. The focus has to go from your own performance and technique to developing the skills of your students. A good instructor also needs to be able to think like a beginner and this is the achilles heel for most experienced dancers who tend to teach fast and are unable to empathize with students who require more time. When picking a good instructor, don’t look at their ability to dance. Pay attention to their communication skills and also their temperament. Are they teaching because they like helping people or are they just trying to pay the bills? Are they patient with students? Do they teach at a pace that their students can follow? Have they put a lot of thought into breaking down the steps in a logical manner?
MISCONCEPTION 5: I have to be really really good before I can go social dancing
2 or 3 lessons from a good instructor is all you need for your first salsa party. It’s okay if you don’t have everything together yet. Most of the dancers out there are still learning just like you. There are always beginners at every salsa party I’ve ever been to. You will have no problem finding people on the same level to dance with. The best way to improve is to take what you are learning in salsa classes and apply it on the dance floor. Relax and don’t worry so much about what other people think. Remember salsa above all is about having fun!

How to Become an Excellent Salsa Dancer
Posted: Dec 03, 2010 |
]]>
This article will help you to learn how to dance Salsa. This article serves to give you specific suggestions and action steps for becoming a better Salsa dancer. In order to become and excellent Salsa dancer, you will need to do 5 things
1. Find an excellent teacher
2. Find somewhere you like to practice
3. Find someone to practice with
4. Invest at least 50 hours of time
5. Continuously improve your dancing by taking private lessons at least once per week
Finding a great salsa dance teacher can make the difference between being a mediocre dancer and an excellent dancer. In order to find an excellent teacher, try to figure out what you are looking for. If you are looking for a dance teacher to teach you how to become an excellent social dancer, look for a dance teacher that has a lot of experience social dancing. If you are looking for a teacher to help you become a top competitor, look for a teacher that has competed professionally and done well. Don’t be afraid to take lessons from 3-5 teachers if you don’t find one you like right away. It is normal for it to take some time to find a great teacher.
Additionally, you will need to find a great place to practice your salsa dancing. You may consider researching local clubs and dance studios to try to find somewhere that offers a salsa dance night. This can help you to become a better dancer by focusing primarily one dance at a time. Often people have the easiest time learning one dance at a time.
Also, you will want to find someone to practice with. Ideally, it is best to practice Salsa with someone who is more experienced then you. Additionally, you can get some great practice by taking private lessons with an excellent teacher on a regular basis.
Learning how to move fluidly and dance salsa and latin dance well takes a little bit of time. You will need to invest at least 50 hours if you want to see progress and feel confident on the dance floor. This amount of time generally tends to help people overcome their fear of dancing, develop confidence, and learn some cool moves.
Taking private lessons on a regular basis can give you a huge advantage over people who only take group classes. Private lessons are great places to learn techniques and how to become a better dancer.

How To Handle The Disposable Digital Cameras
Disposable Cameras (also called single-use cameras) first came on the market as film cameras. You would take the entire camera back where you bought it and they would crack it open, take out the film and process it, resulting in photos that were virtually indistinguishable from photos taken with a more conventional camera. Now, following the trends in conventional cameras, there is a choice between using film or digital disposable cameras.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Ballroom dancing and ballroom, latin, salsa dance dresses
Ballroom dancing encompasses both traditional dances, such as the Waltz, Tango and Quickstep, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz –(the “Standard” category)- and latin dances, including Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba, Samba and Jive, which make up the “Latin” category. On a higher level, however, “Ballroom” branches into two distinct styles – “International”, consisting of International Standard and International Latin, and “American”, consisting of American Smooth and American Rhythm. American Style is more prominent on the North American continent, but virtually unknown throughout Europe and the rest of the world – for this reason, we encourage students to start with International style.
Differences:
If you’re watching ballroom dancing and wondering how to distinguish between International and American styles, here are two points to look out for: dance positions and leg action Standard and Smooth dances. International Standard is danced almost exclusively in closed dance positions while American Smooth allows more moves executed in open position. The Latin and Rhythm dances tend to be a bit harder to tell apart. The dancers’ leg action is probably the best clue as to which style they’re dancing here. In American Rhythm, the dancers will use a bent leg action allowing them to delay their change of weight on the step, so you will frequently see them with bent legs. However, in International Latin, the dancers usually have the look of two straight legs which comes from the faster change of weight on the step. The different ballroom dances can be characterized as follows:
Slow Waltz is counted in ¾ time, and has a classic swooping rise and fall. This is the Standard dance usually learned first.
Tango is known for quick, sharp snaps and dramatic pauses. It is much more stylized than Argentine Tango, from which it was derived, although it is still passionate. It alternates between slow, stalking motion and explosive speed..
Slow Foxtrot is the Standard dance many find the most challenging, and most rewarding. It is smooth, playful, and very slow. Like American Foxtrot, it is done to Big Band music in 4/4 time, but its basic timing is slow-quick-quick and the speed is much slower.
Quickstep is a high-speed version of the Slow Foxtrot. It’s done to Swing-type music and is very energetic and vivacious. Advanced figures include hops, skips, and jumps
Viennese Waltz is about twice the speed of Waltz. The international style is faster than the American style, and very simple. There are only a few figures in the dance, since partners never release their arm hold. Although the speed can make the dance challenging
Foxtrot is a great social dance: it’s fun, not hard to learn, and easy to lead and follow. Traditionally danced to Big Band music, it is smooth and sexy. Its basic timing is slow-slow-quick-quick. The American Foxtrot is upbeat and sprightly, more like the Quickstep than the Slow Foxtrot, looking like an old Fred and Ginger movie. Some jazziness and showdancy quality is added that is not appropriate (or even possible) in international style.
The different latin dances can be characterized as follows:
Cha-Cha is a fast and flirtatious dance that was created by replacing the “slow” in Rumba with a quick”side-close-side” (cha-cha-cha).
Samba is super sexy with a pulsing “1 a-2″ beat and fluid hip action. American Samba features simpler figures than International Samba, but the same music and technique
Rumba is the only slow International Latin dance; is slower than American Rumba, but faster than Bolero. It is sensual and passionate. Its basic timing is slow-quick-quick, like American Style, but all of the figures are different; the “slow” is on beat 2 of the music instead of beat 1.
Paso Doble portrays a bullfight. The man depicts the matador, while the female portrays the flowing and snapping cape. There are only a few songs to which Paso Doble is danced, and they all have the musical highlights in the same place. Thus this dance is usually completely choreographed from start to finish; each musical highlight corresponds to a dramatic pose or drop.
Jive is a tight, precise, extremely fast version of East Coast Swing. Its basic timing is rock step, triple-step, triple-step, and it features swift flicks and kicks and lots of spins.
Bolero is a very slow dance compared to the Rumba. It is swooping and graceful.
East Coast Swing is the basis of many of the other Swings. Its basic timing is “triple-step, triple-step, rock-step
Mambo is similar to Salsa (very fast!). The basic timing is quick-quick-slow.
Salsa has recently grown to be one of most popular club dances. It is fast, sexy, and features a lot of improvisation. It is extremely popular in clubs around the world.
Merengue is a Club dance that is done to really fast Latin music. It consists of very simple steps organized into sets of 8, and features a characteristic hip.

When looking at the images of Modern Art, it can sometimes seem elusive that there was once a time when the highest attainment in art was the accurate depiction of the subject. This was of course in a time before the invention of photography, when such depictions could only come abut at the hands of a skilled artist. When kings and queens, lords and ladies and the wealthy gentry themselves needed something that would stand the test of time, nothing but a hand painted portrait could do.

Salsa dancing… whenever you are trying to learn a new sport…
…it is always important to have the right mindset going into it. Soccer, basketball, baseball, these are all popularly known to have hardworking athletes that tirelessly work on their skills to excel. What most people do not know is that salsa dancing also calls for the same amount of work and maybe even more. To prove that point, all those other sports are played over a span of many games while dance is an all or nothing, one shot deal. It’s all your hours of training pay off and you do well in the competition itself or you choke and fail to reach your goals.
It is a harsh reality that all your work is concentrated into that one moment in a competition. With that said, one of the most important things is making the most out of your ballroom dancing lessons. Whether you are a beginner who is trying to just learn how to dance or an expert trying to perfect each and every move, having the right attitude will benefit both greatly. One quality that you must have is determination.
On top of your determination, you have to let go of all your fears and just go for it. Especially for beginners, some of you may feel that you might look awkward and not do well. Others might feel that they will never be able to get the skills that are being taught.
Another quality that will go a long way is trust. Since this activity requires a couple, placing full trust in your partner’s capabilities and attitude will go a long in creating a successful routine. When your partner feels frustrated with the ballroom dancing lessons, do not bring him or her down by scolding but rather give words of encouragement. Two motivated partners is the best way to make the most out of your dance. Looking at all the qualities mentioned, it obviously takes a lot of mental preparedness to make the most of salsa ballroom dancing lessons and eventually succeed in the sport. It just goes to show that it is a serious activity and is not easier than the more popular sports as some people might think.
It takes just as much for a dancer to be the best as would any other basketball player, soccer player or baseball player. There are even times when the dancing lessons can be more rigorous than that of contact sports. The attention to detail and technicality of the movements demand so much control of the body and very good physical strength and coordination.
In terms of work needed to succeed, it does not pale in comparison to other sports. With all that said, do not be intimidated by ballroom dancing lessons. At the end of the day, if you have fun with what you are doing then regardless of your success or failures, everything will be worth it. Especially when your lessons are for recreation, it is important to keep in mind that ballroom dancing should be fun on top of anything else.
Find some online ballroom dancing lessons and get started today! Learn more about salsa dancing and Ballroom Lessons as it’s always great fun, graceful, elegant, and exciting!
